Keith Laumer is considered to be one of the pioneers of the so-called steampunk genre. His works include comic books, adventure stories and film scripts. I have recently read one his best known books called Worlds of the Imperium and it produced a long-lasting impression on me. 
The novel tells the story of Brion Bayard, a diplomat who tries to escape Soviet spies only to be kidnapped by the agents from a parallel universe. Keith Laumer attempt to create a world in which American Revolution never take place, and the colonies remained under English rule. Brien Bayard finds out that this society is mostly totalitarian; however, he is not willing to leave it. He becomes an Imperial officer and subsequently joins the government.
In my opinion, Keith Laumer tries to show how the moral values of a person can change under different circumstances. By creating alternative version of history, the author exposes the main character to a series of trials which test his integrity.
To be frank enough, I am not sure that this book will always be popular among readers. I encountered the name of the book when I was writing about custom essays and buy essays about science fiction in the twentieth century, and in my opinion, Keith Laumer’s works can be both interesting and thought-provoking. If you like steampunk fiction, you should definitely read Worlds of the Imperium and other novels by Keith Laumer.
